Why creators can — and should — charge for verification calls
Charging for verification is not a way to squeeze money out of a formality. It is the only screening method that costs the other side something, which is exactly why it works — and the fee is a side effect, not the point.
Key facts
- Screening is work: it takes time, attention and emotional energy.
- Payment is the hardest signal to fake — text, photos and promises are not.
- Paid screening scales with demand; free screening collapses under it.
- The fee also compensates you for the majority of enquiries that go nowhere.
Free screening does not scale
If ten people a day ask for a quick call and you grant them, that is your working day gone, unpaid, with maybe one booking at the end. Visibility makes this worse, not better — success in getting attention becomes a punishment.
Payment is the only reliable intent signal
Anyone can send a photo, a long message, or a promise. Very few people will spend money on something they never intend to follow through on. The size of the payment matters less than the fact that one occurred at all.
It protects the client as well
- They confirm you are a real person on camera before committing further.
- They see how you communicate before spending more.
- The interaction is private and browser-based — no numbers or accounts exchanged.
How to talk about it without apologising
State it as your process, once, and do not justify it repeatedly. "Verification is a short paid call" is a complete sentence. Over-explaining signals negotiability and invites exactly the arguments you are trying to avoid.
Common questions
Doesn't charging make me look like a scam?
Scams avoid live video. A verification call is the opposite: you appear on camera, in real time, before anything else is agreed.
What if someone pays and then behaves badly on the call?
End the call. You were paid for the slot, and you learned early rather than after a larger commitment.
Charge for the work you already do
Screening is labour. Price it, and let payment do the filtering.
